AP Calc AB FRQ Question Types
- Rate analysis: Interpreting derivatives as rates of change, accumulation via integrals, net change theorem. Always justify why a function is increasing, decreasing, or has an extremum.
- Area and volume: Area between curves, volume of revolution using disk/washer or shell method. Set up the integral with correct bounds before evaluating.
- Differential equations: Slope fields, separation of variables, initial value problems. Must include the constant of integration and apply the initial condition.
- Graph analysis: Given a graph of f′, find properties of f. Justify answers with calculus language — "f has a local max at x=2 because f′ changes from positive to negative."
Scoring Tips
Show all setup work. Graders award points for correct integrals even if the numerical answer is wrong due to arithmetic errors. Write units in all contextual problems — losing units loses points. On calculator problems, store full decimal values instead of rounding intermediate steps.
