Most students register through their school's AP coordinator by November of their exam year. If your school doesn't offer the AP, or you're self-studying, the process is different.
Step 1: Find Out If Your School Offers the AP
Check with your school's AP coordinator. If yes, they'll register you. Standard fees apply: $99/exam, reduced to $58 for fee-eligible students.
Step 2: If Your School Doesn't Offer It
You can self-study and take the exam at another school. Contact your school counselor first — they coordinate with neighboring schools that DO offer the exam. You'll register through that school. Some schools charge an additional registration fee for non-enrolled students.
Step 3: Confirm Registration by November
The College Board's official AP registration deadline is November 13 (for spring exams). Late registration is possible but more expensive. Don't miss it — late penalty fees can be $40+.
Step 4: Fee Reductions
If your family qualifies for free/reduced lunch, the College Board reduces the exam from $99 to $58. Some states cover the remaining $58 — making the exam free. Ask your AP coordinator about state-specific waivers.
What Happens If You Miss Registration?
- You can take the exam next year.
- You can use AimFive practice in the meantime to maintain your edge.
- Some students take the AP after high school (gap year, etc.) — College Board still administers.
