The two AP English exams reward different skills. Knowing which matches yours can mean the difference between a 3 and a 5.
Focus
- AP Lang (English Language and Composition) focuses on nonfiction rhetoric — analyzing how authors use language to persuade. Essays: rhetorical analysis, argument, synthesis.
- AP Lit (English Literature and Composition) focuses on poetry, prose fiction, and drama. Essays: poetry analysis, prose analysis, literary argument.
Difficulty
- AP Lang: 56% pass rate, 11% 5-rate.
- AP Lit: 77% pass rate, 14% 5-rate.
The pass rates suggest AP Lit is easier, but the 5-rates tell the real story: getting a 5 on AP Lit is notoriously hard. The literary analysis rubric is strict. AP Lang is more accessible for the average student.
Which to Take
- Take AP Lang if: You're a strong analytical writer, like nonfiction, plan to study journalism / business / pre-law / STEM. AP Lang has more universal college value.
- Take AP Lit if: You love novels and poetry, plan to study English / Literature / Creative Writing / Humanities, and can write nuanced literary analysis.
- Take both if: Your school allows. Lang junior year, Lit senior year is a common path.
