How AP Exams Are Scored
Most AP exams combine a multiple-choice section and a free-response section. Your raw scores are weighted, combined into a composite score, and then converted to a 1-5 scale.
APUSH Scoring Breakdown
- Multiple Choice (40%) — 55 questions in 55 minutes
- Short Answer (20%) — 4 questions (3 required + 1 choice)
- Document-Based Question (25%) — 1 DBQ in 60 minutes
- Long Essay Question (15%) — 1 LEQ in 40 minutes

- 5 — approximately 73%+ composite
- 4 — approximately 58-72% composite
- 3 — approximately 42-57% composite
- 2 — approximately 27-41% composite
- 1 — below 27% composite
