The biggest math-AP fork. Both can earn college credit. Both are useful. Here's how to choose.
Content
- AP Statistics focuses on collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data: probability, distributions, sampling, hypothesis testing, regression.
- AP Calculus (AB or BC) focuses on rates of change and accumulation: limits, derivatives, integrals.
Difficulty
- AP Stats: 60% pass rate, 16% 5-rate. Surprisingly tough — requires precise probabilistic reasoning.
- AP Calc AB: 64% pass rate, 22% 5-rate. More procedural — if you can do the algebra, you can do most of the exam.
Most students find Calc easier to study (clear procedures) and Stats harder to master (probabilistic intuition). But Stats is more forgiving of weak algebra.
Which for Your Major
- Engineering, CS, physics, math, pre-med: Calc, not Stats. Calc is required.
- Business, economics, finance: Both useful. Take Stats if forced to choose just one.
- Social sciences, psychology, biology, nursing: Stats is more applicable.
- Liberal arts, humanities: Stats is generally more interesting and useful.
Take Both?
If your schedule allows, Stats senior year after Calc junior year is a great combination — it shows breadth in quantitative reasoning and earns more credit.
