Music + studying is one of the most-debated study questions. Here's what cognitive research actually says + what to listen to.
What Works
- Instrumental music. Lyrics compete with reading/writing for the same brain pathway.
- Lo-fi hip hop. Steady tempo, predictable, no lyrics. The most-recommended for a reason.
- Classical / orchestral / film scores. Studio Ghibli soundtracks, Hans Zimmer, Bach.
- Ambient electronic. Nils Frahm, Tycho, Brian Eno.
- Brown noise / pink noise. Drowns out distractions without engaging the brain.
What Doesn't Work
- Songs with lyrics in any language you understand. Even mumble rap if you parse the words.
- Songs you love (and sing along to). You'll catch yourself singing instead of studying.
- Heavy bass / EDM at full volume. Activates physical movement areas of the brain.
- Brand new music you've never heard. Novelty = attention. Bad.

- "Spotify focus playlists" — Deep Focus, Peaceful Piano, Brown Noise.
When to Have Silence Instead
For LEQs and DBQs (heavy writing): silence beats music. The internal monologue is the music.
