Pre-med is competitive. The APs you take signal what kind of student you'll be — and matter both for admissions and for placement out of weed-out courses.
Tier 1: Take All of These
- AP Biology — Foundation for med school prereqs. Even if your college doesn't accept AP Bio for credit, the head start is real.
- AP Chemistry — Required prereq for organic chemistry, the main pre-med weed-out course. AP Chem makes O-Chem survivable.
- AP Calculus AB (or BC) — Many med schools recommend Calc; many premed programs require it.
Tier 2: Strongly Recommended
- AP Statistics — Essential for biostatistics and reading medical literature. Pre-med programs increasingly require stats.
- AP Psychology — MCAT now includes psych content. Get a head start.
- AP English Language — Medical writing skills matter more than students realize.
Tier 3: Useful
- AP Physics 1 — Required for med school; AP Physics covers part of it.
- AP Spanish Language — Increasingly valuable for clinical work in the US.
Common Mistakes Pre-Med Students Make
- Using AP credit to skip college Bio/Chem. Med schools often want to see those courses on your college transcript. Use AP for placement into more advanced classes, not to skip the basics entirely.
- Spreading too thin. 4 strong AP scores beat 10 mediocre ones. Pre-med GPA matters more than AP quantity.
