AP English Language is 55% essay — your three FRQs matter more than your MCQ performance. With limited time, prioritize essay practice over content review.
The Only Essay Structure You Need
Every AP Lang essay uses the same 0–6 rubric: Thesis (1 pt) + Evidence & Commentary (4 pts) + Sophistication (1 pt). For the Thesis point: write a specific, arguable claim in your introduction — not a restatement of the prompt. For Evidence & Commentary: include at least 3–4 pieces of specific textual evidence and, for each, explain HOW it supports your thesis (not just what it says). The Sophistication point is hard to plan for — focus on earning the other 5 points.
MCQ Strategy for Limited Time
AP Lang MCQ asks about rhetoric (author's purpose, structure, tone, audience) rather than grammar rules. When in doubt: choose the answer that explains the rhetorical effect of a device, not just names it. "The author uses anaphora" rarely earns points. "The repetition creates urgency and reinforces the central claim" is what earns MCQ credit.
