Some AP exams routinely break students. Here are the toughest APs by 5-rate and pass rate — what makes them hard, and what you need to know before taking one.
Top 10 Hardest AP Classes
- AP Physics 1 — 45% pass rate, 8% 5-rate. The lowest 5-rate of any AP. Conceptual physics with brutal multi-step FRQs.
- AP Chemistry — 56% pass rate, 16% 5-rate. Math-heavy, fast-paced, with abstract concepts that punish memorization-only studying.
- AP US History — 51% pass rate, 13% 5-rate. Massive content scope. The DBQ + LEQ format requires real writing skill.
- AP World History: Modern — 56% pass rate, 13% 5-rate. Same essay format as APUSH but covering 700+ years across every continent.
- AP Biology — 64% pass rate, 22% 5-rate. Less brutal than Chem but the content is huge and FRQs reward precise scientific reasoning.
- AP Calculus BC — 79% pass rate, 45% 5-rate. High pass rate because self-selected students take it, but the actual material is significantly harder than AB.
- AP English Literature — 77% pass rate, 14% 5-rate. The 5 is rare because the rubric for literary analysis is demanding.
- AP Physics C: E&M — 70% pass rate, 33% 5-rate. Calculus-based physics. Brutal for anyone who didn't take Calc first.
- AP European History — 59% pass rate, 14% 5-rate. APUSH-style format applied to 600 years of European political and intellectual history.
- AP US Government (yes, really) — 49% pass rate. Looks easy, but the FRQs require precise constitutional reasoning many students don't develop.
What Makes an AP "Hard"
- Cumulative concepts: Chem, Physics, Calc — you can't fake understanding of week 3 if you didn't understand week 1.
- Writing volume: APUSH, AP World, AP Euro — three timed essays per exam with strict rubrics.
- Abstract reasoning: Physics conceptual questions, Calculus proofs, Chem equilibrium — pattern-matching doesn't work.
How to Survive a Hard AP
Daily practice beats marathon cramming. The hardest APs reward students who built real understanding over months — not students who tried to memorize 800 facts in April. Use AimFive for rubric-scored writing feedback and adaptive review of your weak units.
