AP European History has a 5-rate of roughly 13%. It covers roughly 600 years of European history (1450 to present) with a writing-intensive format nearly identical to APUSH and AP World. The chronological depth and volume of political, cultural, and intellectual history make it demanding.
What Makes AP Euro Hard
- Chronological depth: From the Renaissance through the present β students must understand the Renaissance, Reformation, Scientific Revolution, Enlightenment, French Revolution, industrialization, both World Wars, and Cold War in detail.
- Writing demands: DBQ and LEQ require nuanced historical arguments about European-specific causation, continuity, and comparison.
- Intellectual/cultural history: Unlike APUSH, AP Euro tests philosophy, art, and ideas β not just political events β which can feel abstract.
What Makes It Manageable
The same historical thinking skills (argumentation, sourcing, contextualization) that work in APUSH transfer directly. Students who have already taken APUSH often find AP Euro's FRQ format familiar. The content is also highly narrative β it tells a story that's easier to follow than global thematic history.
Who Should Take AP Euro
Strong choice for students who enjoy narrative history, literature, or philosophy. Best taken after APUSH or AP World so the FRQ format isn't new. Excellent preparation for college humanities courses.
Tips for the Hardest Parts
- Intellectual history: Know the key Enlightenment thinkers (Locke, Rousseau, Voltaire, Wollstonecraft) and their core arguments β they appear in DBQs regularly.
- DBQ sourcing: European documents often have strong bias (royal proclamations, revolutionary pamphlets) β the sourcing point is highly earnable here.
- 20th century: The period from 1914-1989 is heavily tested and content-dense. Don't rush it.
