The honest answer depends on three things: which AP, what your starting score is, and what target you're aiming for. Here's a framework.
By Target Score
- Target 3 (pass): Start 6-8 weeks before exam day. Focus on banking the easiest points.
- Target 4: Start 12-16 weeks before. Build foundation + strategy.
- Target 5: Start in October. Most 5-scorers were studying continuously throughout the school year.
By AP Difficulty
- Easiest APs (Psych, Human Geo, Comp Gov): 6-8 weeks is enough for most students.
- Medium APs (Gov, English Lang, Stats, Bio): 12-16 weeks.
- Hardest APs (Chem, Physics 1, Calc BC, APUSH): Start in September. The content is too dense for a quick start.
By Current Starting Point
- You're already strong in the subject: Even 4-6 weeks of focused prep is enough.
- You're average in the subject: 12+ weeks recommended.
- You're starting from near-zero (self-studying): 4-6 months minimum.
