Inside This Unit: The Full Breakdown
Modes and Form covers the church modes and common musical forms (binary, ternary, rondo) and phrase relationships.
Why it matters
Mode identification and formal analysis round out the written curriculum.
Key concepts
- Modes alter specific scale degrees (Dorian raised 6, Mixolydian lowered 7, Phrygian lowered 2).
- Forms: binary (AB), ternary (ABA), rondo (ABACA).
- A period pairs antecedent and consequent phrases.
Modes and Form
Identify modes by their characteristic altered degree relative to major/minor. Analyze form by tracking returning and contrasting sections, and recognize a period as an antecedent phrase (often ending on a half cadence) answered by a consequent (ending on a PAC).
AP exam tip
For modes, compare to the parallel major or minor and spot the one altered scale degree.
