The New AP Psychology Exam Format (Important for 2026)
The AP Psychology exam was redesigned in 2023. The old essay format is gone. Section I is now 70 MCQs in 70 minutes (66% of score). Section II has two free-response questions — one AAQ and one EBQ — in 50 minutes (34% of score). If you're using prep materials from before 2024, double-check whether they reflect the current format.
Most-Tested AP Psychology Units
- Research methods (woven through every unit) — Appear in nearly every AAQ. Know variables, controls, ethics, and correlation vs. causation.
- Units 2-3 (Cognition; Development and Learning) — Classical conditioning, operant conditioning, and memory models are the most MCQ-tested areas.
- Unit 4 (Social Psychology and Personality) — Attribution, conformity, obedience, and group dynamics appear frequently in EBQ scenarios.
