AP Spanish Language assesses interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational communication across three modes. Grammar mastery supports all communication tasks — these notes target the grammar patterns and cultural themes that most frequently challenge students.

High-Priority Grammar: Subjunctive Mood

Present subjunctive formation: take yo-form present indicative, drop -o, add opposite vowel endings (-ar → -e endings; -er/-ir → -a endings). Use subjunctive with WEIRDO: Wishes (querer que), Emotions (estar feliz de que), Impersonal expressions (es importante que), Recommendations/Requests (recomendar que), Doubt/Denial (dudar que), Ojalá. Past subjunctive (imperfect subjunctive): use preterite ellos form, drop -ron, add -ra/-se endings.

Preterite vs. Imperfect and Other Key Grammar

Preterite: completed actions, specific times, sequences of events. Imperfect: background conditions, habitual past actions, age/time/feelings in past, ongoing actions interrupted by preterite. Por vs. para: por = cause/exchange/duration/movement through; para = purpose/destination/deadline/comparison. Ser vs. estar: ser for DOCTOR (Description, Occupation, Characteristic, Time, Origin, Relationship); estar for PLACE (Position, Location, Action, Condition, Emotion). Reflexive verbs vs. passive se vs. impersonal se.

Exam Task Types and Strategies

Interpersonal Writing (email reply): respond to all points, ask a question, formal register (usted). Presentational Writing (argumentative essay): use two reading sources + audio source; cite sources; take and defend a position. Interpersonal Speaking (simulated conversation): respond naturally to each prompt, extend with details. Presentational Speaking (cultural comparison): compare your own community to a Spanish-speaking community; use specific cultural knowledge, not just generalizations.

Six AP Spanish Cultural Themes

Beauty and Aesthetics (arte, arquitectura, moda), Communities (comunidades locales y globales), Global Challenges (desafíos mundiales — clima, pobreza, migración), Personal and Public Identities (identidad cultural, roles de género), Families and Communities (familia, relaciones), and Science and Technology (impacto de la tecnología, ética científica). Prepare 2–3 specific cultural examples (films, traditions, inventions) for each theme.
