The AP exam is in May. Summer starts now. That gives you 9–10 months — and the students who use June through August well are the ones who walk into May already knowing how to earn points. Here is what actually works.
Why summer prep beats last-minute cramming
AP exams don't test memorization — they test skill. DBQs, LEQs, SAQs, and FRQs reward specific moves: a defensible thesis, sourcing, reasoning, complexity. You can't build those skills in a week. You build them over months of writing, getting feedback, and adjusting. Summer is when you start.
The three things that actually move your AP score
- Learn how the rubric works. The AP grader follows a scoring guideline that names exactly which moves earn each point. Read it for your exam. Once you know what the rubric rewards, you study for the rubric, not the content.
- Write full essays and get scored feedback. Outlines are practice for outlines. Writing a full DBQ or FRQ — and then seeing which rubric points you missed — is the fastest way to improve. One real graded essay is worth 10 outlines.
- Find your weak units early. Every AP course has units worth more on the exam than others. A diagnostic quiz in June tells you which units to focus on so you don't spend 10 hours on units that show up for 5% of the exam.
A summer AP prep timeline
- June: Take a diagnostic. Read the AP exam description for your course (free on College Board's site). Learn what the FRQ formats require.
- July: Work through your weak units. Write 2–3 practice essays and get them scored against the rubric. Most students are surprised by which points they actually miss.
- August: Run through a full timed practice section. Check your score prediction. Adjust your fall focus areas.
