APUSH Period 9 (1980–present) is the shortest period chronologically but increasingly appears on the exam — roughly 5% of questions. The Reagan Revolution and its long-term effects on American politics are the most testable themes. SAQ questions often ask you to contextualize recent events against earlier periods.
Reagan Revolution and Conservatism
Reagan's "Revolution" (1981) — supply-side economics ("Reaganomics"): cut taxes (top rate 70% → 28%), deregulate industry, reduce domestic spending, build military; deficit ballooned. Moral Majority — Jerry Falwell's evangelical political organization; combined social conservatism (anti-abortion, anti-gay rights, school prayer) with economic conservatism; realigned Southern white voters to Republican Party. Southern Strategy — Republican appeal to white Southerners using racial codes (crime, welfare, states' rights); completed party realignment: South became solidly Republican. Cold War conclusion — Reagan's arms buildup + Gorbachev's reforms (glasnost, perestroika) → Soviet economic strain → Berlin Wall fell 1989 → Soviet Union dissolved 1991.
Social and Economic Changes
Deindustrialization — manufacturing jobs moved overseas or automated; "Rust Belt" decline; rise of service economy and income inequality. Immigration Act of 1965 legacy — shifted immigration from Europe to Latin America and Asia; US became increasingly diverse. Culture wars — debates over abortion, gay rights, affirmative action, immigration; Roe v. Wade (1973) as flashpoint; Reagan coalition united economic and social conservatives.
Post-Cold War and 21st Century
Globalization — NAFTA (1994), WTO, outsourcing; debate over economic winners (consumers, corporations) and losers (manufacturing workers, developing nations). 9/11 and War on Terror — September 11, 2001 attacks; PATRIOT Act (surveillance powers); Afghanistan (2001) and Iraq wars (2003); debate over civil liberties vs. national security; Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo. FEMA/Katrina (2005) — inadequate government response; raised questions about race, poverty, and government competence. Great Recession (2008) — financial crisis; bank bailouts; stimulus debate (government intervention vs. free market); election of Obama (2008) — first African American president.
FRQ tips for Period 9
Period 9 content most often appears in SAQs asking you to connect recent events to longer historical patterns (continuity/change). The Reagan Revolution is a natural endpoint for LEQs about the growth of government (New Deal → Great Society → Reagan's rollback). Know Reagan's ideology as a point of comparison and contrast.
